The Constant Gardener: A Novel John le Carre
Publisher: Scribner

In October 2008 on BBC Four he told Mark Lawson that his best novels were The Spy Who Came In from the Cold, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, The Tailor of Panama, and The Constant Gardener. I am going to try not to comment on the missing complexities, because that's simply inevitable in a movie of a novel, especially a novel as densely layered as The Constant Gardener. The Constant Gardener (2005), one of the best films of the past decade, has had numerous admirers, but because of its many themes, it has been view ed, and criticized, from a number of different angles. Description: British diplomat Justin Quayle, complacent raiser of freesias and doting husband of the stunning, much younger Tessa, has tended his own garden in Nairobi too long. It's longer than the other books, and I'm not sure it needed to be. The Constant Gardener is a 2005 drama thriller film directed by Fernando Meirelles. The Constant Gardener was written in 2001, much later than the others and I wondered how it might compare to his classic spy novels. Jeffrey Caine's script, adapted from the novel, intercuts present day scenes with flashbacks of the past, giving the audience privileged insight into events that our hero, Justin Quayle (Ralph Fiennes), does not share. The problem is that you can't get the same kind of detail from a movie as you can from a book. In The Constant Gardener (from one of John Le Carré post-Cold War novels), the nemesis is Big Pharmaceutical Corporations who are secretly testing potentially dangerous drugs on the unknowing inhabitants of Africa. I also blogged about the book in August 2005. This is especially true when the book was written by a really good writer. The screenplay by Jeffrey Caine is based on the John le Carré novel of the same name.
